About Us

We’ve always been interested in animals and nature.  At home, we do a lot of talking about the environment and ways we can mitigate our impact on the planet.  Environmentalism and caring for animals and other people is part of our morality and spirituality.  So when there came a point that Zoe wanted to start doing more outside of our home, I thought a lot about how to help facilitate that.

In talking with other homeschool moms, I learned about Roots & Shoots.  And as I researched the organization, I knew it was a perfect fit for us.

We invited our homeschool friends to join us and started meeting in the fall of 2010.  Zoe is completely inspired by the group and the things we’ve done thus far.  Almost every day she comes up with new ideas for activities and more people she hopes will become involved.  I am really inspired by her commitment to it and the sense of self-confidence she seems to feel around her involvement with this type of group.  I’m hopeful that a solid, core group of kids will emerge, and Zoe will have other children with whom to collaborate.

In making this blog, I’d like to help Zoe piece together all the activities of our Roots & Shoots group, so our efforts feel less abstract to the kids involved.    It will also serve as memorabilia, to help the kids remember the important ways they’ve contributed to their community.

Thanks for stopping by!  Subscribe to our blog and join us in our efforts!

    We liked the songwriting workshop.

We started our first knitting projects and we are liking it.
We hope to be able to join you for more roots and shoots activities.

      Hi Ana,

Welcome to the homeschool world! We are Hudson Valley, as well. You should sign up for the area’s Yahoo groups for homeschooling. There’s one for Dutchess County. You would be able to find group activities geared for preschool-age homeschoolers. I have a 6mo and 3yo, myself, but this R&S group is geared to my eldest daughter’s age group at the moment, 6+.

Another idea for you, Ana. There’s an FB group for homeschoolers, and a lot of those guys have pre-school aged kids, too. You can find them at Hudson Valley Homeschoolers on Facebook.

Welcome to the area, Gusty! Our group is mostly based in Ulster County and the Rhinebeck area of Dutchess, but if you’re willing to travel, we would love to have you. You can see another Beacon-area homeschooler posted to me on this page, too. Perhaps you can connect with her when you’re up here, too. I would definitely check out the DCHE Yahoo list as you’ll find a thriving community there with lots of folks in Beacon. In the mean time, I’ve added you to our list, too. Hope to see you soon!
